Coupar Angus Tollbooth Open Doors Weekend
The tollbooth in Coupar Angus was open to the public on the 24th and 25th of September 2005 as part of the Perth and Kinross Open Doors Weekend. The Open Doors Weekend is part of a European initiative to increase public access to buildings not normally open and this certainly applied to the tollbooth which was open to the public for the first time in over 200 years. The highly successful event was well organised by the Coupar Angus and District Heritage Association who in the course of the weekend welcomed over 200 people into the building. Due to the nature of the building with its steep spiral staircase, access was limited to small groups at a time.
Visitors included people from all over Fife and Perthshire, as well as locals who having spent all of their life in Coupar Angus had never had the opportunity to enter the tollbooth. Visitors from every generation were all keen to climb the stairs, take in the views and learn something of the building's history.
The tollbooth will again be open to the public on the weekend of the 23rd and 24th September 2006 and there will be the added benefit of the Coupar Angus Heritage Centre also opening its doors.
